Due to deposition of the high-molecular-weight components of petroleum fluids as solid precipitates, oil companies suffer from production problems like:

 

  • fouling of heater tubes and heat exchangers and poisoning catalysts
  • restricting product flow and heat transfer
  • increasing pressures and temperatures
  • scaling with different types: calcium carbonate, barium sulfate, iron sulfide and sodium chloride damage the pumps and completion systems
  • Corrosion, which occurs because of the presence of hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen chloride, naphthenic acids and other contaminants in the crude oil, attacks the atmospheric distillation tower and the vacuum furnace.
